I’m an assistant professor at Roy H. Park School of Communications, Ithaca College, NY. I received my PhD. degree from Moody College of Communication, University of Texas at Austin. My research focuses on new media technologies and media’s social impacts. A central concern of my research is how the information flows among media institutions and other social agents; how their opinion, discourse and relationships have been shaped in the digital media context, and the broader change in politics, culture and society. I also have keen interests in statistics and data science, especially the methodological concerns raised by emerging forms of media which generate and carry “big data”. I use qualitative, quantitative and algorithmic methods of data collection and analysis.
I have published at peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Communication, Information, Communication & Society, International Journal of Press/Politics and Asian Journal of Communication. My work applies network analysis, data mining approach, structural equation modeling and multivariate analysis as well as ethnography and discourse analysis. I have routinely present papers at AEJMC, NCA, ICA, ISOJ annual conferences, and serve as the reviewer for top peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
I teach classes on multimedia journalism, digital storytelling, journalism research, media, technology and politics, and graphic design at University of Texas at Austin. and Ithaca College. Beyond academia, I have been working and living at various parts of the world, including New York, Washington D.C, California, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in China in journalism, public relations and student advising. Immersing in diverse culture makes me an easy-going person, who is good at communicating and collaborating with people from diverse race and ethnicity.
